Handhelds Dominate Japanese Sales

PSP-3000 remained the bestselling gaming hardware in Japan during the week ended July 25, while the DS line of handhelds continued to lead overall platform sales. PSP Slim & Lite shifted 28,747 units, ahead of DSi XL’s 24,189, but combined DS sales came in at over 47,000, versus total PSP sales of 29,500. read more

Zynga Opens Japanese Studio

Wii Party Back On Top In Japan

Wii Party returned to the top of the Japanese software chart during the week ended July 25. Nintendo’s mini-game compilation sold 99,000 copies in its third week on sale, topping the 72,000 sales achieved by the week’s highest new entry, Marvelous’ Fate/Extra for PSP, which debuted in second place.

Chips Goes Into Liquidation

ELSPA Welcomes UK R4 Ban

The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) has welcomed a London High Court ruling outlawing the importing, advertising or sale of the R4 device that lets users play illegally pirated software on DS. The court said that, because the R4 and similar devices allow users to play pirated or copied games by circumventing security measures, they constitute a breach of copyright

Analyst: Playdom Acquisition “Looks Very Expensive”

Disney’s agreement to acquire social games developer Playdom for up to $763 million appears “very expensive”, according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz. In an investor note he pointed out that EA purchased Playfish – a company with a significantly higher number of monthly active players – for far less last November.

GameStop Acquires Social Gaming Site Kongregate

Leading US games retailer GameStop has entered into an agreement to acquire popular social gaming hub Kongregate. Launched in 2007, Kongregate’s website is home to thousands of free-to-play games with community features like profiles, leaderboards, achievements, multiplayer and a site-wide levelling system. It currently hosts ten million monthly players who spend approximately 23 million hours per month on the site.

PlayStation Biz Swings To Q1 Profit – Report

Sony is expected to report a return to profitability when its first quarter financial results are announced on Thursday. As a result of aggressive cost-cutting Sony will likely post a company-wide operating profit of 30 billion yen ($342 million) for the three month period ended June 30, compared with a 25.7 billion yen loss a year earlier, according to Nikkei (via AGP )
