News: Sony extends logo licensing deals

Sony Computer Entertainment has extended its logo licensing business to allow manufacturers to incorporate it’s iconic brands in clothing, accessories and other non-games products. The Official Licensing Program for PlayStation already has 45 licensees and 123 items, with Sony hoping this new initiative will increase those numbers with new lifestyle branded items. “With the help of third party companies, SCE will enrich the licensed product line-up and deliver various quality lifestyle products that will make the PlayStation brand more accessible than ever,” said the company in a statement.

News: UTV Ignition announces strategic update

UTV Ignition – formerly Ignition Entertainment – has announced that it has completed its rebranding exercise as it looks to a new strategic direction. The company, under the direction of parent entertainment business UTV Group, will now be focusing on the development and publishing of games for digital platforms, including Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network, Steam, Facebook, Google Games and Apple touch devices. It will also be investing in “direct-to-user marketing” in an attempt to build its own community, as visibility in the sector becomes an increasing problem

News: Yoshida: PlayStation 3 is breaking even

Sony’s worldwide studio boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that the PlayStation 3 is no longer being sold at a loss, over three years after the hardware was first released. Back in 2006, analyst firm iSuppli suggested that Sony was losing over $300 on the 20GB PlayStation 3 unit, and over $240 on the high-end 60GB model.

News: Sony details gun add-on for Move

More details have emerged of the PlayStation Move shooting attachment, a gun-shaped device which will retail for $20. The add-on places the Move controller horizontally and adds a new trigger button, so that it may be aimed like a weapon

News: PlayStation Plus subscription options revealed

PlayStation 3 owners will soon have access to a raft of additional online options when a new subscription service – PlayStation Plus – is launched for the PlayStation Network at the end of this month. As part of this year’s E3 press briefing, Sony Computer Entertainment outlined in more detail its plans to offer additional functionality for a fee – although the company stressed that all existing elements, including multi-player gaming, would remain free of charge.

Interview: Insomniac and EA Partners

Although an independent developer for over 15 years, Insomniac has up until now worked exclusively on Sony’s home consoles, creating recognisable brands and characters including Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. But today, the team announced a new deal with EA Partners, to release a brand new title across the two rival home formats – the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.
