Wii Party returned to the top of the Japanese software chart during the week ended July 25. Nintendo’s mini-game compilation sold 99,000 copies in its third week on sale, topping the 72,000 sales achieved by the week’s highest new entry, Marvelous' Fate/Extra for PSP, which debuted in second place.

Sony is to post an operating profit of between 10 and 30 billion yen for the first quarter of its 2010 financial year. That's according to Japanese business paper Nikkei, translated by Andriasang which suggests that the PlayStation business and mobile sectors were both profitable for the company, along with strong sales of SLR cameras and LCD televisions in Japan and in foreign markets. ...

Media Create has released weekly and year-to-date hardware sales data for the Japanese market. Nintendo’s handheld platform leads 2010 sales with 1,180,325 units sold, narrowly ahead of PSP’s 1,101,666. Wii is the best performing home console ahead of PS3, although it's another close run race, with Nintendo’s system on 818,945 sales and Sony’s on 756,325.

Xbox 360 enjoyed a significant sales boost in Japan during the week ended June 27 on the back of new hardware and software releases. The launch of the slim Xbox 360 model, price cuts to older ones, and the release of the chart topping Monster Hunter Frontier Online helped lift 360 sales from 2,060 units the previous week to 17,370. read more

Piracy on the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP formats costs the industry an estimated £28.9 million ($41.6m / ¥3.816tn) over five years, according to research by Japan's Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association. The group, which organises the Tokyo Game Show, conducted the research between June 2004 to 2009, in cooperation with Tokyo University's Baba Lab.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has made a strong start in Japan, comfortably topping the software chart during the week ended May 30. The Wii exclusive sold 340,000 copies in its first three days on the market, bettering the performance of 2007’s original, which shifted 250,585 units in its opening week. read more
