News: Yoshida: PlayStation 3 is breaking even

Sony’s worldwide studio boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that the PlayStation 3 is no longer being sold at a loss, over three years after the hardware was first released. Back in 2006, analyst firm iSuppli suggested that Sony was losing over $300 on the 20GB PlayStation 3 unit, and over $240 on the high-end 60GB model.

News: Publishers could exploit higher iPad prices, warns ngmoco

iPhone and iPad specialist ngmoco has warned that some publishers may look to exploit higher prices for apps on Apple’s newly released handheld device. Simon Jeffery, chief publishing officer for the GodFinger and Rolando publisher, told GamesIndustry.biz that despite the high price of the hardware and apps that sell for double those on the iPhone, his company is still pursing the free-to-play model, and letting consumers pay for extra content and features

Slow Week For Hardware Sales In Japan

Sales of every hardware platform bar Xbox 360 fell in Japan during the week ended May 23. PSP-3000 was again the individual bestseller, while PSPgo remained at the foot of the rankings with less than 1,000 sales. Combined DS sales topped those of Sony’s portable and PS3 edged Wii by around 500 sales.

Hands-on: PlayStation Move’s ‘Move Party’

Click to enlarge The PlayStation Move -equivalent of the minigame compilations released for PS2′s EyeToy, Move Party is an excuse to use Sony’s motion controller to look like a fool in front of your family and friends. (As if holding a glowing wand and pantomiming playing a sport isn’t already silly enough.) Ludwig and I took turns looking utterly ridiculous while playing the title earlier today, trying to best one another in a series of minigames which ranged from swatting bugs with tennis rackets to painting shapes in the air – things that would have been entirely possible with Sony’s older tech. We got a brief taste of the Move’s potential when we needed to stab a spear at jellyfish floating up the screen – I really had to stab toward the screen pretty strongly to pop them.

You could design the next revision of the 360 motherboard

A Microsoft job listing reveals that the company is looking for staff to design a new Xbox 360 motherboard. From the sound of it, the new “Motherboard Design Engineer” will be helping to design further revisions of the existing Xbox 360 architecture, rather than the hardware for a next -next-generation system. “The responsibilities of this position are focused on specifying, designing (schematic capture, PCB layout, BOM, cost analysis), implementing and verifying the mother-board and other various sub-system boards that make up the Xbox 360 product line,” the job description reads.

News: Molyneux: Natal improvements are "countless"

Peter Molyneux has moved to dampen fears over Project Natal lag, insisting there have been “countless revisions of cameras and countless revisions of software” since the demo units shown to press and celebrities in recent weeks were produced. Following a recent London showcase, British TV personality Jonathan Ross commented via his Twitter account that Natal was “not quite there yet”, which prompted Microsoft PR to confirm the hardware and game demo Ross played dated back to summer 2009.

Sales of the new DSi LL dropped off this week in Japan, but the console still sold enough to keep it at the top of the hardware sales chart for a second week. In total, 67,243 units were sold, down from 100,553 during its launch week

News: HMV drops PSPgo price to £149

Entertainment retailer HMV has dropped the price of the PSPgo to GBP 148.99 in the UK. The handheld hardware was first launched at the start of October with an RRP of GBP 224.99, but retail quickly slashed the price to below GBP 200 after less than a week on sale. While larger retailers were happy to initially sell the console, smaller stores were more vocal about the machine, with Chips MD Don McCabe going so far as to predict the hardware would”fail miserably” without traditional boxed software support at retail
