News: GameStop lists Kinect at $150

US specialist retailer GameStop has listed Microsoft’s newly-renamed Kinect peripheral at $149.99 on its website – a reasonable amount higher than the figure of around $50 that was previously thought to have been considered in order to prompt mass market purchase. While Microsoft hasn’t yet confirmed suggested retail prices for the camera-based add-on – which formed the centre piece of its E3 Expo press briefing today – the retailer’s listing is the clearest indication yet for the tech, which will be released in the US on November 4.

Europe offers further acquisition and possible gambling opportunities for Playdom, the social games company currently moving into new regions in a bid to scale up in a rapidly expanding market. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Christa Quarles, chief financial officer for Playdom, said that following its initial moves to localise games, it’s also likely to create specific content from the ground up for European tastes. “We do believe there’s a broader consolidation opportunity right now,” said Quarles

News: Sony readies 3D home assault

As it releases its first four 3D-enabled games for PlayStation 3, Sony has begun to reveal its E3 hand, as well as ongoing plans for 3D viewing at home. The first Sony 3D TV – the Bravia KDL-HX803 – goes on sale tomorrow from around 600 UK stores, and will support 3D gaming and Blu-ray playback for those devices that offer it. The screen will require the separate purchase of a 3D transmitter and glasses, though a higher-end screen due in July will include integrated 3D.

News: Red Dead Redemption sells 5m as Take-Two swings to Q2 profit

Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption has sold over five million units since release on May 18, following a strong second quarter for publisher Take-Two. The company recorded profits of $16.9 million in the three months ended April 30, compared to a loss of $10.4 million for the same period in 2009.

News: Study links violent behaviour to individual personalities

A new study into violent behaviour and the possible influence of videogames has concluded that effects are likely to be limited only to those whose “personalities are predisposed to be highly neurotic, less agreeable and less conscientious.” The research, conducted by Dr Patrick Markey of Villanova University and Dr Charlotte Markey of Rutgers Univeristy, ties in with prior findings involving children exposed to violent TV programmes and cartoons with similar results. “Individuals are not ‘blank slates,’” explained Patrick Markey. “One’s general disposition moderates the effect of violent media.

News: iPhone 4 to launch June 24

Apple has revealed the iPhone 4 at its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Franscico, with the new handheld featuring a built-in three-axis gyro and a significantly increased pixel resolution. The iPhone 4 has six-axis motion sensing with pitch and roll “making it perfect for gaming,” according to Apple, which can be accessed using the new CoreMotion API

News: FTC suggests consumer electronics tax

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed a new 5 per cent tax on all consumer electronics in order to encourage a “reinvention of journalism”. The idea is presented “solely for the purposes of discussion” and does not yet represent a formal recommendation from the FTC

News: Bigpoint signs with Universal for The Mummy IP

German browser games specialist Bigpoint has acquired the license to Universal Pictures’ The Mummy, with plans for an online MMOG to launch later this year. The company is currently pursuing licensed content in order to expand its reach outside of Europe, having recently also signed a deal to produce a game based on Battlestar Galactica. “We are excited to adapt this popular film franchise for the global online games market,” said Heiko Hubertz, CEO and founder of Bigpoint

News: Former Hudson president founds MonkeyPaw Games

Former Hudson Entertainment president John Greiner has started a new company dedicated to releasing Japanese games in the West. Greiner, who has worked in the industry for over 20 years and helped launch the TurboGrafx-16 platform, said that he believes there’s a viable market for Japanese games that are deemed “culturally different”
