News: DDM launches social gaming division

Digital Development Management has opened a new Connected Games division, in order to provide publishers with developers and advice for the emerging social games market. The San Francisco-based talent agency, whose current clients include Zombie Games, Ruffian Studios, Planet Moon Studios and Ninja Theory, now intends to represent developers of games for mobile platforms and services such as Facebook and Twitter. “At a time when games are being played on various devices and screen sizes than ever before, the videogame industry is at a crossroad to develop games that link multiple platforms and reach consumers with consistent and fulfilling game experiences,” said DDM president Joe Minton

FarmVille, other top Facebook games seeing diminishing user base

Due to Facebook’s recent decision to limit the notifications proliferated by third-party applications — Join my Mafia! Feed my Goldfish! Become a Vampire! Fight my Pirates, etc. — the creators of games which appear on the social networking site are beginning to see their player bases decrease dramatically. Gamasutra reports that 12 of the top 25 Facebook games saw more than one million players leave in May, while the worldwide FarmVille community lost more than 7.7 million of its agricultural inhabitants

Microsoft Eyes Social Game Studio CrowdStar

Microsoft is reportedly engaged in talks regarding the potential acquisition of social game developer CrowdStar. Bloomberg sources indicate that the platform holder is keen to purchase the studio, the fourth-largest developer of applications for Facebook with more than 50.8 million monthly active users, but say a decision on any sale may be weeks away. read more

News: Australian developers awarded $240,000 prototype funding

Four Australian developers based in the Victoria region have been awarded a total of AUD $244,450 (£134,706 / $211,354) in prototype funding for digital games projects. Touch My Pixel’s Deadsun, Tin Man Games’ Gamebook Adventures and Incoming from Khrob Edmonds received AUD $96,650 in total, while Andre Spierings was awarded AUD $147,800 for Facebook game Bunni Social. “We believe this development funding will enable some of Victoria’s smaller studios to compete in this lucrative global marketplace,” said Sandra Sdraulig, CEO of Film Victoria, which awarded the funding

News: THQ: Facebook games are brand extensions first, profitable second

THQ has said that keeping users engaged with its brands via Facebook is more important than creating profitable games for the social networking service. The company hopes its Facebook titles – three of which are based on existing THQ franchises – can tide users over until the release of console games.
