News: TIGA: Treasury, not publisher interference, killed tax relief

TIGA boss Richard Wilson has laid the blame for the government’s refusal to adopt tax relief for the games industry square at the feet of the Treasury. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz this morning, the CEO of the UK games trade association did not entirely rule out unconfirmed allegations that a major publisher had sabotaged tax relief plans, but was convinced that efforts to convince the government of the policy’s worth would nevertheless prove successful. “The truth of the matter is we don’t know,” he said of the rumour

News: British Inspiration Awards to honour UK creative sectors

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Conservative leader David Cameron and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg are lending cross-party support to the British Inspiration Awards, a new initiative to honour the UK’s creative sectors, including games, film and the arts. The executive committee for the awards is being led by Nintendo’s David Yarnton, and it will also be a charity-facing event with 100 per cent of proceeds split between Games Aid and The Dallaglio Foundation.

News: Ed Vaizey critical of UK govt support for games

Shadow Culture Minister Ed Vaizey MP has strongly criticised the lack of support given by the present government to the UK videogames industry, which he has labelled as a “critically important economic growth area”. Additionally he outlined plans on behalf of the Conservative Party that would, in the event of a change in government next year, extend the remit of the Film Council to include the videogames industry, as well as offer recognition that developers – as high technology companies – face specific challenges in attracting investment in the UK.
