News: 80 jobs under threat at GAME Group

The GAME Group has said that it is further consolidating its Gamestation business, with the possible loss of over 80 jobs. Since acquiring Gamestation in 2007, GAME has gradually moved the team from York to Basingstoke in a bid to cut costs and unify the two teams last year senior Gamestation staff made the 240 mile trip, leaving just the warehouse and call centre operations in the North. “While our business has continued to outperform the videogames market, we are facing tougher market conditions entering 2010, and must make sure we operate as efficiently as possible while delivering the high standards of service our customers demand.” Read more…

News: US videogame market down 8% in 2009

The US videogame market was down 8 per cent on last year, despite a record December for sales, according to data released by the NPD Group. The industry generated $19.66 billion during the twelve months, down from the $21.4 billion in 2008. Every section of the business was down year-on-year, apart from the handheld hardware market which grew 6 per cent by revenue

EA Planning New Development Centre

Electronic Arts is reportedly planning to invest millions of dollars in a new development and support centre as it seeks to relocate work from high-cost areas like California. The publisher is eyeing possible locations in Atlanta, Louisiana and Florida for the new studio, company spokesperson Jeff Brown told the Atlanta Business Chronicle .

News: Casual games firm Oberon Media lays off 100 staff

Multi-platform casual game developer Oberon Media has laid off 100 employees and COO Don Ryan has departed the company, according to reports. Ryan has apparently confirmed the report as well as his exit from Oberon in order to start up his own business in New York.

News: Dyack: Developer layoffs and closures have been "staggering"

Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack has said that the sheer number of developers being laid off from both in-house and independent studios over the past 18 months has been staggering, and that his company is now only a handful of studios with more than a decade of experience in the business.

Poor, poor GameStop. As the gaming public’s anticipation for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 approached critical mass, they faltered in their loyalty, and took their business to small “mom and pop” game retailers who had broken the game’s street date. Fortunately for the retail juggernaut, Activision showed compassion for its plight, and agreed to let certain GameStops in a few Northeast states start selling the game before Tuesday in order to help combat these vicious local businesses.
